After installing the MAF kit in his E34 535i, Kris had this to say…

WOW!!!!!!!! I fitted the kit over the weekend (couldn't wait, know that I can't set it up accurately without the EGO1 but...) Anyway, installed it (great set of instructions and great kit, had everything), set it to the baseline settings advised in the instructions and started her up. Once warmed up had to reset the LOW knob back one click as she wasn't idling too well but for the moment have left the other settings as advised. Noticed immediately how much better she idled. Took her for a quick spin around the block just to check for driveability problems (none noted) and parked her. Used the Porsche.

Drove to work this morning and WOW!!!!!! It was like driving a different car. First noticed it when I had to get past a road hog, didn't floor the throttle as I want to set her up properly before pushing hard, but I did give it some gas and was surprised at the immediacy of response and the power available. After that, cruising on the freeway doing 60 mph had a clear stretch of road (It was 6.30 am). I gave the throttle just a touch and she just took off!!!! Was doing a hundred when I noticed something else, how smooth she felt. Don't know if the MAF has less intake roar or what but subjectively she felt so much smoother. Unbelievable!!!! Your kit has transformed this car!!!

Please send me the sensor and bung. I can't wait to complete this install (but am more than happy with the results I have already!!)

WOW!!!!!!! Can't help it, have had upgrades done on my cars (I live and breathe high octane) all my life and whilst all have yielded improvements few had exceeded expectations. This kit of yours definitely has!

My deepest gratitude,

Kris

P.S. Almost forgot, there's this hairpin I have to negotiate enroute, no cars great visibility where I practice my cornering on occasion. This time around, came to the hairpin, turned the wheel, punched the throttle and the back started coming around, had to go to full opposite lock immediately! I expect this from some of my other cars but not an automatic BMW! Life shouldn't be this much fun......

I have just had my new MAF kit installed and am very pleased with the performance. Please send me any info you have in the future that might be of interest for my 1988 M5. I would also be very happy to talk with prospective purchasers.

Best to you, Carew Rice

This note is to thank you for your excellent ARM I and ARC II MAF conversion system. I became aware of the Split Second system after exhaustive searches on the internet for some sort of "hot wire" solution to my air flow meter problems.

Extensive modifications to my 1988 E28 BMW M5, notably the Powerdyne supercharger, led to performance problems. The Bosch flapper valve speed density air flow meter did not react very well to the blower. Patchy, and fluttery throttle response resulted in an extremely difficult to tune vehicle. Various solutions were tried, however, none were totally satisfactory. The car was not able to live up to performance expectations. The air flow meter oscillated wildly. Stiffening of the spring and a rubber bumper at zero position was installed within the air flow meter. These modifications helped but did not solve the problems.

The ARC II unit and the 3.5" mass air flow meter blew the performance wide open! The former speed density air flow meter had been enlarged. The stock air box was widened and a K&N filter installed. These were replaced by Split Second's 3.5" diameter mass AFM and a K&N cone filter. The intake breathing couldn't help but be incredibly improved.

Performance response, even off boost, was markedly improved with the Split Second system. Any hesitation, fluttering, and balking was blown away. The system was easy to install. Custom wiring harness, specific to the car, new larger capacity fuel injectors, mass air flow meter, ARC II controller, ARM I air/fuel mixture monitor, comprised the upgrade package. The only minute problem was coming up with a large enough silicone hose to mate the MAF meter to the supercharger intake (thank-you ERT).

Set-up and tuning was eased with suggested starting points for the four dial adjustments on the ARC II. These were for idle, low RPM, high RPM, and acceleration rate. Essentially, the unit translates the air flow signal from mass air to speed density information. This "fools" the Motronic brain into believing the system is stock. I was also able to remove the fuel management system (rising rate fuel regulator), and go back to the excellent programming within the Motronic chip for air fuel mapping. This is a huge advantage. The fuel maps within the chip are more precise than simply raising fuel pressure under boost.

The ARM I is a very sensitive air/fuel indicator. The unit displays valuable information about the air/fuel mixture at all times. The ARC II unit is tuned to optimize the air/fuel mixture. You can feel the difference in engine performance as the mixture is optimized. A click of a dial here and there and your dancing.

The ARC II unit requires fine tuning. This is a small price to pay for fine tuning performance across a large range of torque demands and temperatures. Adjustment is simple enough to do while flying around the racetrack. The learning curve for operation is short and easily understood. The staff at Split Second are very accessible, and well versed in the operation of the ARC II unit. Help is only a short call away.

Feel free to check out my web page at http://www.intronixtech.com/garage. I have detailed the development of my BMW M5 from great car to SUPER car! Split Second is an integral part of the upgrades. I can only recommend this system by my experience as an end user. The system is excellent, and works very well.

Here's the whole exciting story of my MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) conversion.

It is unbelievable how restrictive the stock air flow meter was. The installation wasn't too hard to do. I don't know how long it took, but it was time well spent. Since I was trying to give it a Stock appearance as much as possible. (Like Routing the wires through Factory looms etc.) I didn't keep tab. I was thrilled when my engine fired up. At first the engine ran a little rough with all the ARC2 settings at zero. Going by the instructions, I watched the ARM1 air/fuel ratio meter that is part of the installation. It indicated that the engine was running lean. I adjusted the low control until the engine smoothed out and the meter started to move back and forth. The guys at Split Second explained that the meter reading will go back and forth (or dither) at the proper fuel mixture. This indicates that the DME (ECU) is operating in its normal closed loop fashion.

Then I experimented with a little throttle. While increasing RPMs, the engine started running rough again. I took a glance at the ARM1 meter and it was displaying a lean condition. I adjusted the mid knob until the engine smoothed out and noticed that the meter was moving back and forth.

At this point I felt good enough to start driving the car. I made some further adjustments to the low, mid and high settings. After that I really jumped on it. Wow what a difference! It is unbelievable how much more power this engine has with the MAF sensor. I am already making plans to put this setup on my 535i (my wife's car).

The car ran great but still stumbled off of idle. I adjusted the accel knob until the throttle response picked up - and boy did it pick up. This setup gives way better response than the stock setup.

I had some concern before I did the conversion about how well the car would drive. It seems to function normally with the difference being more power and a crisper throttle response. You can tell I am very pleased. I highly recommend this conversion.

Thanks,
Saliya

Well, after seven or eight months of building, adding, fixing, and the usual wrenching, my bike is being shaken down and dialed in.

I added the Split Second ARM1 and EGO1. The EGO1 was mounted in the supplied boss which was welded into a Supertrapp muffler at about the centerpoint (where clearance was best and least conspicuous).

The device paid off from day one. It disclosed a leak in the carb due to a missing o-ring! The mechanic that I hired to dial in the carb in addition to other work just plain left the o-ring out! Then he jetted the carb down to compensate! So, the ARM1 gave a good diagnostic report on the problem and saved me lots of grief. I think performance metering will become much more important as bikers realize how it can save them time and money.

Thanks for providing your excellent product!

I just ran a 12.07 and a 12.09 on the G-Tec !!!! with only 18 psi peek!!!

(Here at 4800ft) can't go any higher with out hitting 1000c that's almost 6/10's from the ARC and a set of 500cc injectors!!!! This thing is the best thing to ever hit the street!!!

This past weekend I got everything in place, the boost controller is very nice. How does the transmission hold up to the extra power.

The ground was a little moist but not much and the 00' Passat chirped the tires in second gear. I love the added power the controller gives.

I also put in a HUD and turbo timer, I confirm with another gauge besides the BCS led's that the I can produce over 1 bar and I like it! You have any other tips let me know, thanks

I recently installed your "Boost-Controller" on my new Audi TT and the performance increase is fantastic! The whole personality of my car has changed for the better. The installation was easy and when I had a question your tech guy was most helpful. I only wish that the expensive exhaust system that I'd just installed improved the performance half as much.

Thanks again for an outstanding product.
